I’ve done a couple of these but really poorly and not very consistently. I am a terrible runner and a 5km in 35 minutes is a good day at the office for me. My wife on the other hand is an ultra marathon runner and crosses a 32 mile finish line with a smile on her face and spring in her step.
So on our 10th wedding anniversary we ran the Fell Foot Park Run near Windermere in the Lake District. Despite all of our running and triathlons etc this was the first event we did together.
Now, don’t get me wrong, we have been in the same event once or twice but she’s never waited for me. (I’m not counting the absolute failed family 3.5km “run’ we did with my son a few years ago where he cried all the way round. It hardly even counted as an event as a result. By the time we got to the end all the biscuit medals were gone and my son cried even more!)
This time, this one time, she waited for me and jogged painfully beside me the whole way round. Unfortunately, I tore my calf trying to run up a slope onto a meadow and so had to walk a fair bit. As a result, I crossed the finish line effectively in last place with my some what embarrassed wife who had placed the 8th lady at the Aviemore park run a few weeks earlier and 10th lady at her last ultra marathon.
That said, it was on this year’s bucket list and all I can say is I’m glad it’s over.
